Description:

Spain, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. Rare wooden carving commemorating the battle between Spain and the Moors. While now culturally offensive, this was still fresh in the mind of the Spanish as late as the 17th century (and even later). St. James aka Santiago Matamoros fought against the Moors around 850 CE. Even today Spanish Catholics call upon Santiago Matamoros in times of distress. Shown painted in polychrome colors and riding his steed, they trample the hapless Moor laid out in front of them. Wood base. Size: 9-3/4"L x 14-1/2"H. Provenance: Ex-Historia Antiques, Santa Monica, CA All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #107184
