China, Neolithic Period, Machang Phase, ca. 2300 to 2000 BCE. This pottery jar was made over 4,000 years ago during the Machang Phase ) of the Majiayao culture, also known as the Gansu-Yangshao culture, from present day Gansu or Qinghai province. The outer surface and inner mouth have been decorated with geometric patterns using fired-on mineral-based pigments of two different colors. On the inner surface are marks left by ancient root/plant growths. Size: 4-7/8" H x 5" W.
