Description:

Northern Europe, Viking or Norse Culture, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. A massive iron axe head with one side a long rectangular pick separated from the axe blade by a central socket with small tabs for mounting on a pole. The axe blade has a pointed end, a slightly curved and sharpened edge, and an elongated bottom section that denotes the 'bearded' connotation as it resembles the lengthy beards of Viking warriors. This large axe required great strength to wield and was probably passed down from generation to generation before being buried with or deposited by its final owner. Size: 13.25" L x 8.125" W (33.7 cm x 20.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
