Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A pretty carnelian intaglio of Cupid, the Roman god of love, riding a hippocamp set into a modern silver ring to be wearable. The winged deity sits atop the back of the half-horse half-fish and appears to hold a trident in one hand. The translucent orange-red of the intaglio is nicely complemented by the modern silver ring, which is comprised of a raised bezel, an openwork shoulder, and a trifurcated band. Size of ring: 0.9" L x 0.8" W (2.3 cm x 2 cm); of band: 0.2" W (0.5 cm); of intaglio: 0.6" L x 0.5" W (1.5 cm x 1.3 cm); US ring size: 6.6; quality of silver: 89.08 to 91.36%; total weight: 4.6 grams
