Description:

**Originally Listed At $450**

Roman, Northern Africa, Imperial Period, ca. 120 to 180 CE. A mold-formed pottery oil lamp with a flat base bearing a planta pedis reading "MNOVIVSTI" - the mark of a workshop in Northern Africa that was active from 120 to 180 CE. The circular vessel has a rounded shoulder, a pierced tab handle, and a semicircular wick spout that protrudes from the front. Within the recessed tondo is a stylized scene of erotica displaying a man grasping the hips from behind a woman on her hands and knees atop a rectangular bed. Remains of dark red-orange pigment suggests this vessel was covered in rich colors at one time. Size: 3.9" L x 2.75" W (9.9 cm x 7 cm)

Several oil lamps bearing the same planta pedis can be found at the J. Paul Getty Museum under inventory numbers 83.AQ.377.126, 83.AQ.391.7, and 83.AQ.377.206.
