Description:

Jörg Immendorff (Germany, 1945-2007), "Nachtbuch", colored lithograph, numbered 78/180, 1969 CE. A colored lithograph entited "NACHTBUCH" (Night Book) as is written on the binding of the open book depicted, by Jörg Immendorff, a leading new German Expressionist, numbered, dated, and signed by the artist in orange ink on the verso. Immendorff belonged to the Neue Wilde (German for "new wild") movement, also known as the Junge Wilde (German for "wild youth") movement - a group within the art world that challenged political authority and arose in oppositon to more established Avant Garde art movements such as Minimalism and Conceptual Art. Though a colored lithograph, this composition displays broad brushstrokes, demonstrating the "wild" of the "new wild" technique of the original image. The subject matter may reference Germany's dark history being exposed. Interestingly, several years prior to the creation of "Nachtbuch", Elie Wiesel's classic book entitled "Night" (1960) was published. "In Night," Wiesel said, "I wanted to show the end, the finality of the event. Everything came to an end—man, history, literature, religion, God. There was nothing left. And yet we begin again with night." (Morton A. Reichek, "Elie Wiesel: Out of the Night," Present Tense, Spring 1976, 46, cited in Fine 1982) A powerful political piece of visual culture by the artist Jörg Immendorff, a controversial figure of the art world whose sexual escapades sometimes overshadowed his artistry. Size: 12.25" W x 12.25" H (31.1 cm x 31.1 cm)
