Native American, Southwestern United States, Hopi, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. Indecipherable signature on underside of base. A skillfully carved wooden badger or Honan kachina doll depicted wearing a helmet mask crowned with Eagle plumes and positioned in a dynamic pose as though mid-dance. Vibrant pigments adorn the surface of the sculpture, adding to its movement and vivacity. Dressed in a skirt with an elaborate belt, tall boots, and thick armbands, he holds a blue rattle in his right hand and a plant in his left - likely to represent his responsibility of the growth of healing herbs. His white-painted chest is otherwise left bare, while a maiden's collar covers his shoulders and a lengthy fox tail falls from his posterior. Size: 3.25" W x 8.625" H (8.3 cm x 21.9 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
