Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona or New Mexico, Hopi Peoples, ca. late 20th to early 21st century CE. "Home Dance Kachina, Hemis" by Tino Youvella (Hopi, active 1962 to present). This is a large and elaborate hand carved and decorated wood kachina doll with intricate details added in leather, feather, yarn, and plant material. Hemis Katsina is traditionally painted with black corn smut with contrasting light-colored half-moons across his chest as we see in this example. In addition, he wears leather and painted arm bands, and a painted skirt with leather belt and plastic plants, and a rabbit fur tail on the verso. Around his neck is a dried wreath of plant sprigs. The headdress tableta is finely painted with abstract phallic and cloud symbols and capped with bird feathers. Hemis appears in the Home Dance or the Niman Ceremony, and neither clown katsinas nor side dancers appear with the line of Hemis, only the Hemis Manas. Signed and titled on underside of base. Size: 9" L x 4" W x 20.5" H (22.9 cm x 10.2 cm x 52.1 cm)
