Sylvester Ayek (Inuit / Inupiak / Inupiaq), Anchorage, Alaska, 20th century. A bear or wolf head with three baleen wands spaced across the head by native Inupiaq artist Sylvester Ayek who works to preserve the Inupiaq traditions threatened by modernization and climate change today. Ayek grew up on the tiny island known as King Island, far north of Anchorage in the Bering Sea. When he was twelve years old, his family left King Island when his village's school closed. Although, nobody lives on King Island today, Sylvester and other King Islanders return during the summers to maintain their cultural connection. Currently living in Anchorage, Ayek is a successful sculptor whose work has been exhibited in museums and acquired for permanent collections such as the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC. Size: 8.75" W x 6.2" H (22.2 cm x 15.7 cm); 8.75" H (22.2 cm) on included custom stand.

This piece includes baleen and cannot be sold internationally without a CITES certificate.
