Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Sican / Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1370 CE. A delightful, highly burnished, blackware stirrup vessel, with a slightly flattened spheroid body with a relief image of a lord wearing a dramatic half-moon crest on either side. Twin spouts project from the flattened strap handle, which has a figure of a manta ray with a human head at its raised center. Most of what we know about Sican comes from a large area called the Batan Grande Archaeological Complex, a huge ceremonial and cemetery site for a little-understood ancient civilization. With pyramids rising over 40 meters high and thousands of tombs, the area represents a lengthy period of occupation. Nearly every tomb contained a variety of ceramic vessels like this one. Size: 6.5" W x 8.05" H (16.5 cm x 20.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-private D. Jeppesen collection, Oregon, USA, acquired before 1982
