Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Sican/Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1350 CE. A delightful example of a blackware stirrup vessel with a globular body and deep trench around the body. The interior of the trench contains relief crabs and lobsters. Two fish heads emerge from the shoulder on either side of the handle. A monkey crouches against the side of the spout. Sea life was associated with Naymlap, the traditional founder of the Lambayeque dynasty, who came from the south by sea and colonized the region before, it was said, sprouting wings and flying off into the sunset. Size: 5.9" W x 9.5" H (15 cm x 24.1 cm)
