Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Sican/Lambayeque culture, ca. 500 to 700 CE. A hand-built blackware pottery vessel on a corseted discoid foot, with a globular body, a rounded shoulder, a tapering spout, and an applied strap handle joining neck to body. The head which doubles as the neck of the spout represents Naylamp (also Naymlap, Nanlap, or Nylamp), the traditional founder of the Lambayeque dynasty who came from the south by sea and colonized the region before he allegedly sprouted wings and flew off into the sunset in a dramatic display of his magical powers. A pair of smaller human figures in low to high relief lie in a prone position facing Naymlap, and two more similarly prone figures rests atop the handle. Size: 5.625" in diameter x 6.375" H (14.3 cm x 16.2 cm)
