Description:

Southeast Asia, Java, Indonesia, Bengawan Solo River, Late Pliocene, ca. 2.2 to 3.0 million years ago. Wow! A fossilized portion of the upper skull from a hippopotamus, Hexaprotodon sivalensis. Hexaprotodon means "six front teeth" and this skull retains two of the massive incisors of this creature, which are quite intimidating! Today there are only two species of hippo both only found in Africa, whereas prehistoric records shows there was once a greater variety of species with a distribution across many continents, including the British Isles! Fossils from Hexaprotodon have been found from Indonesia to Nepal. This skull is a fabulous find and beautifully preserved! Size: 16" L x 10.5" W x 7" H (40.6 cm x 26.7 cm x 17.8 cm)
