Description:

North America, Shannon County, South Dakota, White River Formation, Late Eocene to Early Miocene, ca. 37.2 to 20.4 Million years ago. A fossilized skull from Dinictis squalidens, a false saber-toothed cat in the Nimravidae family. This skull beautifully displays the large and once-razor sharp saber teeth. This saber-toothed mammal once roamed prehistoric North America, and its oversized canines are similar to the famous Smilodon (saber-toothed tiger); however, Dinictis was not a true cat! These animals were 2 feet tall (0.6 meters), and likely looked like a small leopard. Their highly developed saber-teeth could stab and easily sever the blood supply in the neck of their prey. It is thought they hunted prey considerably larger than themselves, such as camelids and prehistoric oreodonts. Truly a remarkable and rare specimen! Size: 6" L x 4" W (15.2 cm x 10.2 cm); 8" H (20.3 cm) on included custom stand.
