Description:

Near East or Central Asia, Iran and Southeastern Turkey, Sassanian (Sasanian/Sassanid) Empire, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A beautiful brownware long-spouted pitcher with an arching handle and a tab thumb rest at the apex. The carinated body rests on a flat foot, and a dramatically flared neck rises from the center. The spout is supported by a tall neck and the channel groove extends horizontally outward, a curved hook adorns the point that touches the rim - all resembles a bird like a crane. Such an ornate neck might help filter wine dregs, but ultimately may have been ritualistic, pouring libations during religious ceremonies or funerals. Size: 11.5" L x 6" W x 6" H (29.2 cm x 15.2 cm x 15.2 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report is available to the buyer upon request.
