Description:

Ancient Near East / Central Asia, Sasanian (Sassanian/ Sassanid) Empire, ca. 2nd to 7th century CE. This is a lovely schist stone plaque that is incised with a portrait of a bearded man in profile, with a foliate background. The rectangular panel is deeply incised, and the recesses areas have light mineral deposits that contrast against the dark gray of the schist. The visage consists of an angular pointed chin, nose, large ovoid eye and a domed cap or headdress. The scrolling vines and leaves create a frame for the central face. The panel has been set into a sterling silver bezel with an open back and an integral suspension loop at the top. Size (pendant): 1.7" W x 2.4" H (4.3 cm x 6.1 cm); (frame): 1.9" W x 3" H (4.8 cm x 7.6 cm); 4.2" H (10.7 cm) on included custom stand; silver quality: 95.7%
