Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest, artist Robert Thomas (Salish, b. 1979), dated 2001. A skillfully carved wooden rattle in the form of a Thunderbird's head and painted with red and black pigments that boldly contrast with the natural wood. This piece is incised with an inscription on the bottom that reads, "Thunder Bird - R. Thomas - Nan. B.C. 2/01". Robert Thomas is a First Nations carver and dancer born in Mission, British Columbia and a member of the Coast Salish Nation. The beauty of Thomas' piece is especially visible in the contours of the facial features and the revealed layers of wood allowing for great depth. The interior is filled with dried seeds to produce a pleasing percussive sound when shook. A wonderful musical instrument created by this master Salish carver. Size: 11.75" L x 4.75" H (29.8 cm x 12.1 cm); 8.25" H (21 cm) on included custom stand.
