Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, Canada, Kwakwaka'wakw people, ca. 1998 CE, Erich Glendale (b. 1972). One of my absolute favorites, a gorgeous hand-carved wooden ceremonial rattle in the form of a killer whale. Signed by the artist, Erich Glendale. The long body is carved with deep linear and geometric symbols; the tail consists of three ripple-like layers, while the tall fin is carved with deep ridges. The rattle makes a deep, pleasing sound. The surface has a smooth, dark red cedar surface. Size: 18.2" L x 4" W x 11.7" H (46.2 cm x 10.2 cm x 29.7 cm)

Erich Glendale is a member of the Kwakwaka'wakw Nation, was born in Campbell River, British Columbia, and now lives in Port Alberni, also in British Columbia. He usually works with yellow cedar, but also works with red cedar, gold, and silver. His work focuses on imaginative clan totems, of which this example is one.
