Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast Peru, late Salinar to early Moche culture, ca. 200 BCE to 250 CE. A wonderful storage vessel featuring a concave, flared foot, dramatically sloped walls that rise to a discoid body, and a rounded top upon which sits a stylized figure. Wearing a pointed hat, the ancient figure places both hands on his left thigh and displays tubular limbs and a large head with huge, almond-shaped eyes, a flat nose, and a slender mouth held in a gentle smile. Behind the seated figure is an arching strap handle that terminates at a projecting, conical spout. A whistle situated behind the figure's head was used to produce a loud, high-pitched sound when air was blown into the spout. Size: 7.125" in diameter x 7.25" H (18.1 cm x 18.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-private St. Simons Island, Georgia, USA collection; ex-Galleria Delvecchio, acquired before 2010
