Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Salinar to Moche cultures, ca. 100 to 200 CE. A fascinating pottery portrait jar with a stirrup spout rising from the top. Presenting a spherical body and a flat base, the redware vessel exhibits a stylized visage comprised of bulging, almond-shaped eyes, a large nose with wide nostrils, and an incised mouth, all flanked by a pair of rectangular ears with annular earspools. The surface of the jar is adorned in a lovely shade of pale orange with black-painted pupils and parallel, zigzag striations that stretch diagonally across the cheeks.
