Lot 10
Egypt, Romano-Egyptian Period, ca. 30 BCE to 2nd century CE. This is a pottery standing figure made from two molded halves and with a hollow, ovoid base. It depicts a woman standing under an arch supported by two narrow columns. She is nude aside from a flowing cape she has thrown off her shoulders. She stands contrapposto, with her arms and legs posed naturalistically; her head is slightly tilted and she has a large upswept coiffure. The artwork shows the clear influence of the Classical World on Egypt, where previous to Greco-Roman influence, it had been rare to depicted figures either naturalistically or from the front. Soil stuffed inside the base may be indicative of the piece being made to be pushed down into the ground or some other soil surface. This may have been a votive offering and the woman may be a goddess. Size: 3.1" W x 7.55" H (7.9 cm x 19.2 cm)
