Description:

Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 2nd century CE. A fascinating votive statue, cast from bronze, depicting a woman in the act of childbirth. She is shown squatting, a common ancient method for giving birth, and, although her arms are now missing, they probably once were attached to figures of attendants, who in both Egyptian and Roman birth depictions are often shown supporting the mother from either side. The baby's head can be seen crowning, and the woman has her head back, depicting great effort - although her hair remains in place, nicely styled at the back of her neck! A votive figure like this one was probably given as an offering to a goddess in hopes of a successful childbirth, or possibly held during labor to provide support. Size: 1.45" L x 1.45" W x 2.05" H (3.7 cm x 3.7 cm x 5.2 cm); 3.7" H (9.4 cm) on included custom stand.
