Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fine mold-formed terracotta oil lamp with a circular base and planta pedis (maker's mark), rounded walls, lightly-angled shoulders, a pierced, trifurcated ring handle, a recessed tondo, a small fill hole, and a heart-shaped wick spout. Within the tondo is a stylized depiction of the mythical hero Hercules ascending a staircase, grasping a lengthy spear in his right hand, and raising an enormous club over his head with his left hand. The maker's mark on the underside of the base, while faded, reads "MMOVIUS II." Size: 2.75" W x 1.625" H (7 cm x 4.1 cm).

  • Condition: Handle repaired from two large pieces with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor nicks to base, body, and handle, with fading to some finer details on tondo and maker's mark, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
