Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A delicate, gorgeous 22 karat gold drop earring with an upside-down teardrop-shaped wine red carnelian inlay. The inlaid gemstone is surrounded by a scalloped border with an S-curve attachment on the back for suspension. A suspension loop at the bottom has a dangling, spool-like pendant hanging from it. Size: 0.4" W x 1.4" H (1 cm x 3.6 cm); 2.9 grams

Roman women - especially of the upper classes - had their ears pierced, a single hole in each, and wore one set of earrings at a time. Jewelry was particularly important to women in Roman society because it was legally their own property, independent of their husband's wealth, and they could use it as they saw fit.
