Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful silver ring bearing a carnelian intaglio of an eagle perched on a pillar holding a laurel wreath in its beak and a palm branch in its talon; an allegorical composition about victory and supremacy. The ovoid gem is set in a raised bevel with a sloped shoulder featuring incised horizontal striations, as the band tapers at the opposite end. The eagle was a prominent animal in ancient Rome known as a symbol of pride and victory in the eyes of the legions. Known as "aquila" in Latin, the eagle was a representation of honor, victory, and cohesiveness within a legion. Size of intaglio: 0.4" L x 0.3" W (1 cm x 0.8 cm); of ring: 0.9" L x 0.8" W (2.3 cm x 2 cm); US ring size: 5.25; silver quality: 94.9%; weight: 6.6 grams
