Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A wonderful ensemble of 3 Roman intaglios: one of deep green glass depicting a galloping centaur with a bows and arrow, another of yellow agate showing a striding Victory with a wreath and shield, and the last sculpted from carnelian portraying the left-facing portrait head of Mercury (Greek Hermes), the Roman god of commerce, travelers, and thieves. Size of largest (centaur): 0.9" W x 0.8" H (2.3 cm x 2 cm)

Provenance: ex-Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan USA acquired before 2000

  • Condition: Chips to lower left and verso of Victory, lower left of Mercury, and peripheries of verso on centaur. All have some small nicks and abrasions commensurate with age as shown. Otherwise, mostly intact with liberal remaining detail and encrustations in areas. Light iridescence to centaur. All easily set in a pendant or ring to be wearable.
