Roman, early Imperial period, reign of Augustus, 27 BCE to 14 CE, silver Cistophorus tetradrachm, Ephesus mint, ca. 25 to 20 BCE, set in 14K gold bezel as pendant for necklace; held by 4 prongs. Obverse: IMP CAESAR, bare head of Augustus to right. Reverse: AVGVSTVS Capricorn to right, head to left, bearing cornucopia on its back; all within laurel wreath. The cistophoric tetradrachm is a scarce denomination and with the depiction of the first Roman emperor on the obverse and the Capricorn on the reverse, it is an important coin that has been all set to wear as an attractive and unique piece of jewelry in a 14 karat gold bezel with a leather cord and silver clasp. Cohen 16. RIC 480. RPC I 2213. Total weight of coin and gold bezel, 15.4 grams; coin is 1" W (2.54 cm); cord is 27" L (68.58 cm).
