**First Time At Auction**

Roman Empire, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A well-thrown, redware bowl with a broad shallow receptacle detailed with pair of incised, concentric circles on the tondo and a flat rim with a delineated edge, all on a minimal ring foot. This type of pottery was mass produced in Roman provinces and exported throughout the western part of the Empire. They were made to be used for displaying and serving foods. Some were decorated, but many, like this one, were simple shapes with a plain finish. Many of them originated in Roman Britain; some came from the famous Pompeii "hoard", a collection of the vessels found in a crate that had arrived in the town yet had not been taken out of their packaging when Mt Vesuvius erupted on August 23, 79 CE.
