West Africa, Nigeria and Benin, Yoruba peoples, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A pair of linked human male and female representations, cast in bronze, with loop holes connected with a brass chain attachment. Each figure terminates in a long, thin cast iron pin. These figures are known as edan, resembling Onile, the owner of the earth, who has both male and female forms. These could be used only by highly esteemed society elders. Comes with custom stand. Size of each (approximate): 1.1" W x 7" H (2.8 cm x 17.8 cm); size of both displayed on stand: 3.95" W x 7.5" H (10 cm x 19.1 cm)
