Description:

Roman Empire, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. An attractive red slipware terracotta mortarium, this vessel features a raised ring base with a concaved center, smooth sloping walls with six distinct circular bands of incised linear patterns, a flared rim, a deep bowl cavity, and a raised lip that encircles the upper cusp of the bowl. The raised bowl edge terminates in a funnel-shaped opening on the rim for effortless and directional pouring. Some of the original slip covering is still visible. Mortaria were heavy bowls, often with thick flanges, with sand/grit embedded in their internal surfaces. These were used for pounding and mixing foods. Size: 6.2" W x 1.625" H (15.7 cm x 4.1 cm); bowl depth: 1.75" (4.4 cm).
