Description:

Europe, Neoclassical, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. A gorgeous ensemble of five carnelian intaglio cabochons, all of ovoid form and presenting with lovely hues of red, ranging from cardinal to burgundy. Each of these bares intricately carved classical motifs; three with figures and two with symbols. The first figural intaglio feature Ceres, the goddess of agriculture, dressed in a toga and holding wheat. The second displays a woman or goddess in a toga dropping seeds with her right hand while a long-necked bird sits on her left shoulder. The last exhibits a nude male, perhaps the Roman god of wine, Bacchus (Greek Dionysos, also Dionysus), next to a jug standing in contrapposto with his back to the viewer as he holds out a vessel. The two other intaglios depict a cornucopia and an intriguing symbol of a cane sticking out of a boot with a club and heart-topped staff crossed behind it. Size of largest: 0.375" W x 0.625" H (1 cm x 1.6 cm)
