Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Roman, late Republic to early Imperial period, ca. 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. A hollow, mold-made pottery bust in the form of a goddess. She may be Juno (Hera), queen of the gods and wife of Jupiter (Zeus). She wears a tall crown and a chiton fastened with a large fibula on one shoulder and presents a young and classically beautiful face with a serene expression. Size: 2" L x 3.5" W x 6.25" H (5.1 cm x 8.9 cm x 15.9 cm)

Like many similar figures, when originally created, she would have been painted bright colors; however, because these pigments were applied after firing, they generally do not survive to the present day. Votive pottery busts were part of a style also popular in Greece, Egypt, and the ancient Near East. They were made in large quantities for ritualistic or religious purposes - buried with the dead (perhaps representing a favorite person or god of the deceased), offered at temple dedications, and displayed in household shrines.
