Description:

Roman Empire, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A wondrous mold-made terracotta statuette depicting Eros holding an expressive actor's mask. According to the ancient Roman historian Livy, the Romans first patronized theatre performed by the Etruscans in the 4th century BCE. Some scholars, however, argue that theRomans experienced theater even prior to this. (See Richard C. Beacham. The Roman Theatre and Its Audience. Harvard University Press, 1991.) Actual Roman dramatic productions emerged in 240 BCE with Livius Andronicus' plays. The Roman Republic's expansion into Greek territories which took place between 270 and 240 BCE had brought about exposure to the great traditions of Greek drama: tragedy, comedy, and the satyr play. In addition, theatrical productions comprised part of a festival called Dionysia honoring the god Dionysus. Perhaps this bearded figure is an abstract representation of the legendary god of the vine, the grape harvest, wine, revelry, and theater - Dionysus or Bacchus as the Romans called him! Size: 2.75" W x 5" H (7 cm x 12.7 cm).
