Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. This dynamic mold formed pottery oil lamp has two men caught in the midst of a match. Traces of the lovely russet glaze outline two wrestlers in bas-relief. They stand in the recessed tondo, one bent forward in a neck hold. The winning wrestler straddles the fill hole with his braced legs. Three concentric rings top the rounded walls of the tondo. This piece sits on a flat base with two concentric circles. The neck is embellished with curled volutes that flank the pointed wick spout. Wrestling was a sport popular in Roman times for exercise and training; this piece elegantly captures a match of strength. Size: 3.5" L x 2.375" W x .875" H (8.9 cm x 6 cm x 2.2 cm)
