Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A fabulous mold-formed redware pottery oil lamp with a circular base and faded planta pedis, smooth walls, a rounded shoulder ringed with concentric circles, a large fill hole, a vent slit on the neck, and a spade-shaped wick spout flanked with a pair of volutes. Within the recessed tondo is a raised scene depicting Pan riding a horse, his lower body facing forwards and his upper body facing backwards, with his head raised and playing a lyre with both hands. The galloping horse boasts a flowing mane, a bushy tail, and delineated genitalia beneath. Covered in red slip, this is a fine example of Roman sculptural artistry! Size: 3.3" W x 1.125" H (8.4 cm x 2.9 cm).
