Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A mold-made pottery oil lamp that has a recessed tondo with a scene of two men boxing. The lamp sits on a flat base with an incised ring and the top of the walls are encicled with several incised rings that frame the scene. A man stands with his fist drawn back ready to strike, while his other hand holds the neck of another man, pinning him to the ground. The other man is halfway raised up with one arm lifted above his head. The central fill hole is placed in between the two figures. A rounded wick spout projects from the side of the lamp with two spiraling volutes that border the neck channel. The surface of the pottery is a rich orange with darker burnished areas that highlight the dynamic scene. Size: 3.45" W x 1.12" H (8.8 cm x 2.8 cm)
