Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely mold-formed pottery oil lamp painted with red-orange pigment that depicts a pair of gladiators dueling within the recessed tondo. The lamp features a circular base with a stamped planta pedis consisting of gamma and alpha, an acute carination, a rounded shoulder decorated with a register of volute-tipped palmette leaves, and two pairs of spiraling volutes flanking the circular wick spout. Within the tondo are a Thracian gladiator and a murmillo (also mirmillo or myrmillo) class gladiator fighting with swords and shields in their hands. Size: 3.3" L x 2.875" W (8.4 cm x 7.3 cm)

  • Condition: Minor abrasions to base, shoulder, tondo, and wick spout, with chipping and light fading to pigment, and softening to some finer details, otherwise intact and very good. Nice remains of pigment throughout. Original lamp contents solidified and visible within interior.
