Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A wonderful mold-formed pottery oil lamp with a raised ring base, rounded walls, a sloping shoulder with recessed concentric circles, a recessed tondo with a large fill hole, and a diamond-shaped wick spout with grooved shoulders. Within the tondo is a rendition of Eros, the winged god of passion and romance, standing nude with plumed wings while playing a stringed lyre with both hands. Eros is one of the most prevalent deities in the Roman Empire as an apotropaic symbol for warding off bad luck with love and fertility. Size: 3" W x 0.8" H (7.6 cm x 2 cm).
