Description:

ORIGINALLY OFFERED AT $350

Roman North Africa, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. This lamp is one of the mass produced, mold-made pottery lamps from Roman North Africa. It has a rich, deep color, especially around the nozzle, where it has darkened from use. It has a sunken discus, two pour holes on either side of the central design, an unpierced lug handle, and a wide channel running down the nozzle. The design on the discus of this lamp is of a leaping goat, legs tucked up under his body in the unmistakable shape of a stotting ungulate. It is surrounded by shapes of arrows and what appear to be doors, also done in the delicate, stippled style of lamps from this time and place. Size: 6" L x 3.5" W x 2.2" H (15.2 cm x 8.9 cm x 5.6 cm).
