Description:

Northern Greece, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. Thracian relief with a galloping horseman holding a spear in his raised right hand. The hero wears a short chiton; a cloak fastened around his chest flows behind him from his shoulders. The horse is depicted with raised forelegs and a trimmed mane. The tail and one foreleg are cursorily indicated with lines. The representation of horsemen on steles is a recurring motif of eastern Balcanic mythology during the Roman era. The riding hero is thought to be a deity of Ancient Thrace. Size: Just over 9"H x 6-1/2"W. Provenance: Ex-Bavarian collection, acquired 25 years ago. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #107168
