Description:

Classical Antiquities. Rome, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A skillfully carved marble head depicting a mustachioed, bearded male with an expression of wonderment - those well-defined eyes peering upward toward the celestial realm - his visage complemented by a well-defined nose, rounded cheeks, closed full lips, and naturalistic ears. Just who this visage represents remains a question? Perhaps he represents a bearded god, possibly Jupiter (Zeus) or one of the Roman wind gods -- Eurus of the east, Zephyr / Favonius of the evening, Boreas / Septentrio of Scythia and Ursa Major, and Notos / Auster of the north. Regardless of his identity, this is a special example, finely carved and marvelously expressive! Custom stand. Size: 3.625" W x 4.875" H (9.2 cm x 12.4 cm); 6.875" H (17.5 cm) on included custom stand.
