Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. Finely cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process, a solid bronze animal group depicting a lion attacking an antelope, the ferocious predator leaping upon the terrified ungulate's back, the wild feline ruthlessly sinking its fangs into the neck of its prey. An incredibly dramatic, action-packed rendering - you can almost hear the powerful roars of these wild animals! The ancient Romans created notable metalwork, oftentimes in the form of zoomorphic and anthropomorphic figurines. Beyond the enticing artistry and iconographic symbolism, bronze animal figurines created by the Romans also had a purpose. In this case, for instance, this piece was probably a yoke fitting. A very fine example in fabulous condition with wonderful green patina, on a black acrylic base. Size: 3.25" W x 1.75" H (8.3 cm x 4.4 cm); 2.375" H (6 cm) on included custom stand.

In the classical world, lions symbolized power, wealth, and might. They were famously featured in many ancient myths, perhaps the most famous being that of Heracles (Herkules) slaying the Nemean lion for his first labor. The lions fur was believed to be impenetrable to attacks since according to legend it was made of gold and its claws were far sharper than swords with the power to slice through armor. In the end, Heracles defeated the lion by strangling it and wore its skin.
