Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, Holyland, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A hand-built clay paver tile fragment that was laid by a member of the 10th Roman Legion known as Legio Decima Fretensis. A rectangular legion stamp of Latin script that reads "LE X FR" denotes the Legion 10 (LE X) with the name of Fretensis (FR). This is the Roman legion which was stationed in Jerusalem from 70 CE, the year of the destruction of the city by Titus, to the reign of Diocletian. Tiles and pipes bearing the stamp of the Tenth Legion have been found elsewhere in Jerusalem and its vicinity, such as the Roman baths at Ramat Rahel. A fascinating piece of Roman history! Size: 1.5" L x 6.7" W x 7.1" H (3.8 cm x 17 cm x 18 cm)

For a similarly stamped tile found in the Roman baths at Ramat Rahel near Jerusalem please see object # MC 0387 at the Israel Museum Jerusalem.
