Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast-leaded-bronze patera handle with a youthful face as the finial, perhaps depicting a cherub or a young Dionysus. The slender handle features an effigy of a standing warrior with a short-cropped beard and a domed helmet, and the facing outwards from the shoulder is a second face with fleshy cheeks that perhaps shows an actor or a figure of prominence. The handle exterior is covered with rich russet patina, and blue-green patina along the shoulder interior suggests a high tin content in the metal. Size: 1.45" W x 4.5" H (3.7 cm x 11.4 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection; ex-Trifles Gallery, Wiscasset, Maine, USA; ex-Ross Levett Antiques, Thomaston, Maine, USA; ex-private old Maine, USA collection
