Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A beautiful ovoid intaglio carved from mottled blue lapis lazuli featuring the incised likeness of Victoria (Greek Nike), the winged goddess of speed and strength and the personification of victory. Victoria stands upright and faces to the left while wearing an ankle-length himation and folding her wings behind her back. A laurel wreath is held aloft in her raised left hand as she clutches the handle of a torch in her right hand. Size: 0.6" L x 0.3" W (1.5 cm x 0.8 cm)
