Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely example of an ancient glass pendant of a lozenge shape that is capped with a pair of gold caps. The glass was originally a deep red-purple hue with ribbons of opaque white glass coursing throughout, and time has given it a rainbow iridescence that shimmers in the light. The gold caps are adhered to either end of the glass bead and a gold wire suspends the entire pendant from a necklace strand. A fantastic, wearable example of ancient Roman opulence! Size (pendant): 0.4" W x 0.9" H (1 cm x 2.3 cm); (necklace): 21.75" L (55.2 cm); quality of gold: top cap is 91% (equivalent to 21K+) and bottom cap is 97.5% (equivalent to 22K+); total weight: 3.4 grams

Provenance: ex-Phoenicia Holyland Antiquities, New York, New York, USA, acquired in the late 1990s; ex-Kamyas Antiques
