Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE; Near East, Byzantine to Islamic period, ca. 6th to 13 century CE. A fascinating ensemble: a Roman iron nail and 4 Byzantine and Islamic rings of silver, brass, and leaded bronze. Both Byzantine rings are insignia rings: one is the largest of the 4 and cast from low-zinc brass with the monogram "THS" on its bezel, and the other is silver and inscribed with the letter "R" decorated with abstract vegetal motifs. Similarly, the Islamic rings are inscribed in Arabic: the most petite, silver ring with a minimalist script across its teardrop-shaped bezel and the leaded bronze thumb ring with a few characters across its flange. Size of largest ring (Byzantine brass): 1.2" L x 1.1" W (3 cm x 2.8 cm); of largest bezel: 0.7" L x 0.6" W (1.8 cm x 1.5 cm); US ring size of largest: 14.75; of nail: 5.75" L x 1" W (14.6 cm x 2.5 cm); silver quality: 67 to 96.3%; total weight of silver rings: 4.4 grams
