Roman, Republic Period, ca. 1st century BCE; Europe, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A sumptuous intaglio carved from a fragment of sard, a type of chalcedony exhibiting russet and brown hues. Incised on the top surface is a crouching warrior with left leg raised and right leg lowered, with helmeted head turned and peering off behind the right shoulder, and with left hand brandishing a sword. The right hand holds an unidentifiable implement, perhaps another type of weapon. Size (intaglio): 0.46" L x 0.38" W x 0.12" H (1.2 cm x 1 cm x 0.3 cm); (ring setting): 0.56" L x 0.84" W x 0.90" H (1.4 cm x 2.1 cm x 2.3 cm); gold quality: 84.35% (equivalent to 20K+); weight: 8.5 grams; US ring size: 7.5

  • Condition: Wearable as shown and constructed in modern times. Intaglio is ancient; ring setting is modern. Minor abrasions to intaglio and ring setting, otherwise intact and very good. Great luster on ring, and nice remaining details on intaglio.
