Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An ultra-fine hammered high karat gold sheet band, either created to adorn the arm or the wrist, presenting a stippled border, the form tapering to an angle with pierced termini for attachment. The ancient Romans accessorized themselves according to age, gender, and social standing. Women generally amassed more jewelry than men, wearing earrings, necklaces, rings, fibulae, and bracelets. The reason jewelry was so important to women was that it was one of the few possessions considered to be their own property, maintained independently of their husband's wealth and symbolizing their wealth and elite status. Although this piece is too thin to test, it is clear that this gold is of a high karat. Size: 8.25" L x .375" W (21 cm x 1 cm) Weight: 4.1 grams

Provenance: private Bavarian collection D.S., actively collecting from 1960's to 1978
