Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A playful chalcedony intaglio featuring a dancing satyr or fawn carrying a pedum or shepherd's crook over his shoulder from which 2 hares hang behind him, all set in an over 21 karat gold ring to be wearable. The jovial daemon wears cascading drapery that wraps around the front of his staff and then over his left shoulder, exposing his bare legs, buttocks. He joyfully raises his left foot, bending the leg at the knee as he dynamically gazes right, his thick coiffure crowned by an ivy wreath. Characterized by their ribaldry, satyrs are known for their lascivious and inebriated behaviors, as well as their loves of wine, music, dancing, and women. As such, they were frequent companions of Dionysus (Roman Bacchus), the god of wine, fertility, and religious ecstasy. Size of intaglio: 0.7" L x 0.6" W (1.8 cm x 1.5 cm); of ring: 1" L x 0.9" W (2.5 cm x 2.3 cm); US ring size: 8; gold quality: 89.77% (over 21 karats); weight: 5.3 grams
